This is how it starts… with an idea, with a vision, with a dream, a project or maybe even a friendly discussion. We need visionaries and people with great ideas. It is the founding blocks of a new and wonderful future, for all of us. I find it very comforting to see more and more people escaping the tunnel view (a tunnel with a very dim light, I might add) and coming up with interesting initiatives that promise to make the old systems obsolete.
You never change things by fighting the existing reality.
To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.― R. Buckminster Fuller
Although this idea has been around for a while, there are many thinkers who share their vision with us out there (on the Internet). The idea that I am going to promote in this article comes from Jacque Fresco, an American futurist and self-described social engineer. Fresco is self-taught and has worked in a variety of positions related to industrial design. He also writes and lectures his views on sustainable cities, energy efficiency, natural-resource management, cybernetic technology, automation, and the role of science in society.
The Venus Project is Fresco’s gift to us, a vision that advocates global implementation of a socioeconomic system which he refers to as a “resource-based economy”.
The Venus Project is an organization that proposes a feasible plan of action for social change, one that works towards a peaceful and sustainable global civilization. It outlines an alternative to strive toward where human rights are no longer paper proclamations but a way of life.
They argue that our current economic systems (socialism, communism, fascism, and even the vaunted free enterprise system) perpetuate social stratification, elitism, nationalism, and racism, primarily based on an ever growing economic disparity. As long as a social system uses money or barter, people and nations will seek to maintain the economic competitive edge or, if they cannot do so by means of commerce they will by military intervention. This promotes an ever growing separation among ourselves as a species, the biggest obstacle that keeps us from achieving our true potential and perhaps the shortest way to regression.
The Venus Project provides a series of books, video documentaries, papers and articles that support the ideas presented in the concept. Technological advanced concepts provide sustainable solutions for the disciplines most basic to our survival like: housing, transportation, city systems, construction, energy, space and even cities in the sea.
This is what The Venus Project is all about – directing our technology and resources toward the positive, for the maximum benefit of people and planet, and seeking out new ways of thinking and living that emphasize and celebrate the vast potential of the human spirit. We have the tools at hand to design and build a future that is worthy of the human potential.
Whether or not this really proves to work as described and intended we will never know until we collectively start taking action and manifest this into a better future for all of us. However, the most important thing that comes from all of this is that only by daring to envision a future where everyone is treated and lives equally, we might some day – hopefully not to long from now – achieve it.
If you like this idea or have other interesting ones that embrace the same values please share them with us and the rest of the world.
